I own a Dell 8600 laptop (the one with a widescreen LCD). I must admit that I think this is one of the best laptops ever built (and I have owned about 8 different laptops/portable computers over the years). The screen has a maximum resolution of 1920x1200, which is perfect if you are programmer geek. But the drawback is of course that the screen gets sort of screwed up if you use a traditional monitor at your office (wrong aspect). So of course my solution (being a most logical solution of course), was to go out and get a 23” Apple Cinema display. You need this special adapter from Apple to work with a PC and you need the docking station for the correct video port, but oh does it work.
This of course was the only logical choice at the time (since I typically spend at least 10 hours a day tethered to my desk). In practice it was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. The Apple cinema display is fantastic. It is truly a dream to work on. And now that I have the use of the full 1920x1200, I don’t think I can ever go back to a lesser resolution (or is it larger? not sure of the syntax here).
One other note... Since I have an ultra-cool Hayworth programmer workstation (which I will extol the virtues of in a future post), I had to also have a special plexi-glass stand made. It is really just a slab of ½ inch clear plexi-glass with beveled edges, but it matches the display nicely, and gives my office that wonderful geeky shine.
Anyway, the Dell 8600 with docking station and Apple 23” Cinema combo is an excellent choice.
